70 children (aged 11–18 yrs) were divided into 6 age groups to study a longer-latency waveform, slow wave (SW), across a developmental span where processing strategies are known to occur. During each block of trials, 3 events occurred: a frequent tone pip, which occurred 66% of the time; a pitch change (PC) from the standard frequency; and a stimulus omission (MS), which occurred 17% of the time. Stimuli were presented binaurally using headphones and had an interstimulus interval of 800 msec. Ss responded to 1 of the infrequent events with a finger lift that activated an RT key. On any given block of trials, Ss were instructed to respond as quickly as possible to either the PC or the MS. EEGs, EOGs, and RT were recorded, and the averaged event-related potentials to the PC were analyzed. Findings show that the relationship of endogenous component amplitude to the relevant variables and scalp location was consistent with previous studies using similar tasks with adult Ss. There were no marked changes in N250 or P350 latencies or in RT with age, indicating that decision-and stimulus-evaluation times were similar across ages. There was a decrease in overall negativity (N250, P350, and SW) observed with increases in CA, suggesting an underlying shift in potential beginning as early as 250 msec poststimulus. It appeared that SW was the source of this shift.(33 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
