The International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics held its first international symposium in Florida, USA, October 30 to November 4, 1983, and brought together scientists from the fields of toxicology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and environmental and agricultural sciences, all with one common interest: metabolism of foreign compounds. This book is the proceedings of the symposium and the articles presented were printed directly by photo offset which came out creditably clearly. Papers were presented under five headings. These include the cell biology of xenobiotic metabolism, under which are discussed the localization, intrahepatic distribution and regulation of enzymes involved in xenobiotic metabolism. Papers on the prediction of metabolic pathways give detailed accounts for the prediction of pathways for the metabolism of halogenated hydrocarbons, organonitrogen compounds and xenobiotics with functional sulphur groups, stereochemical consideration of drug biotransformation and distribution, and unmetabolisable foreign compounds. The paper, Prediction of Metabolic Pathways--Current Status and Future Prospects, by Caldwell and Hutt, presents a good summary of the problems of predicting any metabolic pathway for a xenobiotic molecule both in the phases I and II reactions. Other papers were presented on comparative xenobiotic metabolism in plants, bacteria, aquatic species and mammals, and the metabolic basis of chemical toxicity. Paulson provides an excellent opening to the discussion on comparative metabolism of foreign compounds in his article on the economic and toxicological importance of comparative xenobiotic metabolism. Finally, papers on the physiological control of metabolism discuss androgenic regulation of cytochrome P-450, the effects of aging, infection and diet on the metabolism of foreign compounds.
