The link between mosquito bites eliciting hypersensitivity with lymphocytes in the form of natural killer (NK) cells and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is explored. Patients have been reported with hypersensitivity in conjunction with high proportions of natural killer cells, and patients with chronic active or latent EBV infection with severe hypersensitivity to mosquito bites. Patients with hypersensitivity to mosquito bites with NK cell leukaemia have also been reported to have EBV genome in the peripheral lymphocytes. Furthermore, crusted lesions have been seen on the face of patients with hypersensitivity years before death, but have also been seen in patients with lymphocytic malignancy with hypersensitivity to mosquito bites and patients with latent EBV infection and/or lymphoproliferative disorders. Mechanisms linking the 3 conditions are discussed.
