Robotic science, like other future-oriented technoscientific fields, has a complex relationship with its past. Much of the field’s history is too recent to have entered the scientific history books, and is instead passed down orally within lab meetings and at research conferences. Research robots, key artifacts for historians of robotic science, are in high danger of being lost when they are no longer scientifically valuable, making access to and interpretation of past results more difficult. We present an effort to incorporate historical ways of knowing into an existing transdisciplinary robotics project. The effort includes partnerships with archivists and data scientists and is informed by deep embedding into the daily practice of robotics. By combining the collection of significant documents and artifacts, and the promulgation of best practices for producing and storing data, with day-to-day interaction with roboticists in the midst of their practice, our team seeks to develop trustworthy memory practices that will better interpret, and potentially help improve, research into living and working with robots.
