Forty-seven strains of B. coli were examined by the electron micro-scope. Two kinds of filamentous appendages were seen: "flagella", scanty (e.g. 1-4 per bacillus), wavy, long and 0.02 [mu] wide, and "fimbriae", numerous (e.g. 100-250 per bacillus), short and 0.01 [mu] wide. The flagella occurred in all of 33 motile strains and in none of 14 non-motile strains, apparently being the organs of locomotion. The fimbriae occurred independently of motility, in 25 of 33 motile strains and in 6 of 14 non-motile strains; their presence was associated with a power in the bacilli enabling them to adhere to and agglutinate various kinds of cells, including red blood cells. Haemagglutinating activity was observed in 34 of the 47 strains. Its development was maximal after growth in peptone water for 24 - 48 hours at 37[degree]C. Thirty-one strains showed generally similar activities, each agglutinating most of the red-cell varieties tested. Fimbriae were present in all these 31 strains (though not in cultures grown under such conditions as rendered them non-agglutinating.) Fimbriae were not found in any of the 13 strains wholly devoid of hemagglutinating activity, nor in 3 strains which showed weak hemagglutinating activities of unusual specificity. It was concluded that the fimbriae function as organs of attachment which bind the bacilli to cell surfaces, and that they are responsible for the common hemagglutinating activities of B. coli.
