Attempted to facilitate the consolidation of a passive avoidance response by injection of a single dose of norepinephrine (NE) in the lateral ventricle of the brain in 105 male albino Charles River rats immediately after the training trial. One group of Ss was pretreated with diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) to affect NE depletion. All experimental groups in the controlled test received a 10mg intraventricular injection of NE and were retested. Results confirm previous reports that inhibition of NE biosynthesis during passive avoidance training prevents long-term (but not short-term) retention of the newly-learned response, and furthermore that immediate posttraining administration of exogenous NE largely reinstates the capacity for long-term retention of the avoidance response. Since state-dependency explanations can be ruled out, results support the idea that NE neurons play a crucial role in the consolidation of learning.(34 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
