The paper examines the respective merits of the main statistical approaches to brittle failure. These approaches based upon the weakest‐link concept are the Weibull approach, Batdorf's approach, and a multiaxial elemental strength model. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether these theories are capable of meeting the requirements of ceramic reliability prediction and component design. Also discussed is the legitimacy of these weakest‐link theories for treating delayed fracture. Alternative solutions are outlined.
