6. Based on evidence in this and the preceding paper, it is concluded that I, and I2 are GABAergic, Cl-mediated responses produced by dendrodendritic synapses between granule cells and mitral cells. Elimination of the inhibitory potentials reveals a new, long-lasting depolarization, which is produced only by orthodromic stimulation. Possible sites and mechanisms of E, generation by synaptic circuits within or near the olfactory glomerulus and the functional significance of this type of excitatory action are discussed.
