An epidemic of stomatitis associated with a vesicular exanthem on the hands and feet and a maculopapular eruption primarily on the buttocks occurring during the summer of 1963 in a pediatric outpatient population in Tucson, Arizona, is described. Virus studies, using tissue culture techniques, yielded Coxsackie virus A-16 from the vesicles of 4 patients, from the mouth scraping from 2 children, and from one rectal swab. Medium L-15 was used for these studies. The clinical and viral data of the patients in this series are compared with those of the epidemics in Toronto in 1957, and California and Birmingham, England, in 1959. Two infant deaths associated with Coxsackie A-16 infection recently reported are cited as evidence of the importance of recognizing this illness by physicians caring for children.
