Slceletal muscle fibers are versatile entities capable of adjusting their phenotype to altered functional demands. Several experimental models are currently used for studying the effects of altered neuromuscular activity on fiber phenotypic expression patterns. In general, increased and decreased activity have opposite effects leading to fiber type transitions in opposite directions (Fig. 1).
