Nobody knows the origin of the cliché “It’s not over till the fat lady sings,” although these words are a fair description of the current debate about whether being overweight or obese is good or bad for a person’s health. The arguments run as follows.During the past 2 decades the prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes has increased to unprecedented levels in the United States, placing obesity right after tobacco-related diseases as the number two cause of preventable death (1). Obesity is the cornerstone for the metabolic syndrome as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (2) and is also associated with certain forms of cancer. Data from the Framingham study have identified obesity as an independent risk factor for the development of heart failure (3). Add to this a host of comorbidities, ranging from degenerative joint disease to sleep apnea, and the conclusion is simple: obesity is bad for one’s health.
