The American Statistical Association (ASA), in its seventh quarter century, has been central tomy personal and professional life. I joined the association just a few years before its 150th anniversary and became an active volunteer shortly after that, having of course no idea that I would have the unique and remarkable privilege of serving as the executive director during the association’s 175th anniversary. As I write, I have held this position for almost exactly 7.5 years. At age 59, I can be quite certain someone else will be the executive director during the 200th anniversary, and that if we proceed true to form there will be several who follow me before that auspicious occasion in 2039. Indeed, because none of us should count on tomorrow, I write this as though today is my final day as executive director. Naturally, I hope that is not the case, so not only do I write for those who follow, but also to me for however long after today it is my turn to serve this great society. My message to those who follow is simply stated: We must increase the visibility of our profession. How we do that, of course, is the challenge we have been facing for many years, and will continue to face in the decades to come, but it is a challenge we are aggressively addressing.
