Conducted 2 experiments to determine the relationship between duration of visible persistence and temporal and spatial separation of stimuli. The 1st experiment extended previous work of F. Efron and D. Lee (see record 1972-10043-001). Seven staff members of the Life Sciences Division of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Ames Research Center (including the author) were presented with a single line in a succession of orientations, each separated by a fixed angle and by a fixed interval of time. Ss reported the number of successive lines that appeared to rotate together. The perceived number of rotating lines increased linearly with the rate of stimulus presentation, with a slope proportional to the spatial separation. The linear functions obtained in the 1st experiment predicted the results of a 2nd experiment in which the same Ss adjusted the spatial and temporal variables to a discrimination threshold for seeing 2 rotating lines. Overall results indicate that, over a significant range of spatial and temporal variation, the visible persistence of a briefly presented stimulus increases with the distance separating that stimulus from other stimuli occurring later in time.(39 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
