Crustose coralline algae occur in close relationship with several forms of shallow-marine carbonate cementation in modern seas. Striking examples are: littoral and sublittoral algal constructions, such as the Lithophyllum corniche in the Mediterranean Sea (Peres, 1967; Alexandersson, 1969), the algal ridges and reefs in Bermuda and the West Indies (Ginsburg and Schroeder, 1973; Adey, 1974; Adey and Vassar, 1975; Dean and Eggleston, 1975); and rhodoliths, unattached algal nodules that occur in virtually all seas (Bosellini and Ginsburg, 1971; Alexandersson, 1974). Internal carbonate cementation is often of great importance for the fmal composition and structure of such algal constructions, particularly where the frameworks are attacked by boring macroorganisms.
