The resistivities of thoracic tissues were measured at low frequencies by a four-electrode technique. Approximate results in ohm-cm were 2,000 for lung, 2,500 for fat, 700 far liver, 250 and 550 (anisotropic) for heart, 150 and 2,500 (anisotropic) for skeletal muscle and 160 for blood. The resistivity of the intact human thorax was measured to be 463 ohm-cm. The same quantity predicted from the individual tissue measurements was within 8% of this value. Additional experimental data is reported to explain differences between these findings and some previously given by other investigators. The results are intended to provide basic data for certain areas of electrocardiographic research.
