This paper is part of an overall research initiative to define the emerging intermodal issues, identify alternative solutions and develop strategies to achieve them. The intermodal logistics policies of the European Union, the North American Free Trade Agreement countries, and Asia are reviewed, but the focus is on the United States and Japan in NAFTA and Asia respectively, because they have been the prominent leaders on international trade in their regions. From the Asian standpoint, there is no common intermodal strategy yet.
