When you look at the cover of someELT coursebooks for the first time, you think both ‘That’sa good/strange/silly title!’and ‘I wonder what sort of book this is?’because the title does not help you know who the book is for or what kind of book it really is. That is not the case with the book before me now, whose title is functional and direct. Even the acronyms are given in full, in small red letters underneath. However, as with other unknown books, one can turn to the back cover blurb to seek clarification. There it says that this book is a course ‘designed for teachers and trainee teachers preparing for the Cambridge ESOL Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT): Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) module’. So it is a preparation course for a particular exam for teachers. And indeed, the TKT has apparently been doing quite well since its inception a few years ago. Apart from the basic Test, which covers Background to Language Teaching, Planning for Language Teaching, Classroom Management, and a practical assessment of teaching competence, Cambridge ESOL have added optional specialist modules on Knowledge about Language, Teaching Young Learners, and this one on CLIL.
