An introduction to the phenomenon of superconductivity and an elementary treatment of the theory of superconductors open this book, which would be suitable as a reference book for metallurgists and physicists or as a textbook for a graduate course on superconductors. A discussion of the applications of superconductivity and the demands these applications make on materials' properties and requirements and how these requirements are met is included. The physical metallurgy of superconducting materials, the electron microscopy of superconducting materials, and the contribution superconducting magnets can make to the improvement of electron microscopes are explored. Fabrication of superconductors for special applications, e.g. as power transmission and use in radio-frequency devices, are discussed. Attention is given to the effects of radiation on superconductors and to some speculation about possible future applications of superconducting materials. The information is divided into 10 chapters, and separate abstracts have been prepared for each chapter. (BLM)
