Recombinants derived from crosses between reovirus serotypes 1, 2 and 3 were utilized to identify the ds [double-stranded] RNA segments encoding polypeptides of the .mu. and .sigma. size classes. The results indicate the following assignments: M1 ds RNA encodes polypeptide .mu.2, M2 encodes .mu.l, M3 encodes .mu.NS, S1 encodes .sigma.1, S2 encodes .sigma.2, S3 encodes .sigma.NS and S4 encodes .sigma.3. Polypeptide species .mu.2 was conclusively identified as a structural component of the reovirus core. A new nomenclature for the viral polypeptides is discussed.
