In the final chapters, some new work is discussed, much of which has arisen in response to earlier criticisms. Nested logit and micro-simulation, for instance, are neat ways to cope with linked choices, and they begin to tackle some long-standing concerns about the assumption of independence. What we are not given is a sure proof that behavioural theory is always appropriate. Nor are we presented with a new body of empirical knowledge; therefore I am left wondering what it is about transport that we know today and would not have known without these studies. For graduate students and professionals working in transport analysis, this guide is essential-and rewarding-reading. Generally the style of writing is lucid, the sequence of themes is logical, the layout is easy to follow, and there are plenty of examples to help the student learn and convince the professional that his non-chargeable time is well spent. Summaries at the end of each chapter consolidate what has gone before, and worked examples would have helped even more (I think a primer for students would be welcomed).
