Abstract We classify all connected $n$ -dimensional complex manifolds admitting effective actions of the unitary group ${{U}_{n}}$ by biholomorphic transformations. One consequence of this classification is a characterization of ${{\mathbb{C}}^{n}}$ by its automorphism group.
