Anin vitrophagocytic and cell viability assay is described that allows for directL. terrestriscoelomocyte exposure to small volumes and low concentrations of toxins. The results are included of assessments of the exposure response sensitivity of coelomocyte viability and phagocytosis to inorganic (CuSO4) and organic (Aroclor 1254 [chlorinated 1,1′-biphenyl]) chemicals. Results of comparisons of coelomycetes exposedin vitroandin vivousing lowest observable effects levels (LOELs) of chemical exposure concentration are given. Based on LOELs, absolute sensitivity ofin vitroviability and phagocytosis assays was < 1.0 µg Cu2+, whilst phagocytosis appeared to be 200 × more sensitive than coelomycete viability to chlorinated 1,1′-biphenyl.In vitroassays were ≥10.7 ×103and 8.94 ×106times more sensitive thanin vivoassays for Cu2+and chlorinated 1,1′-biphenyl, respectively. Both viability and phagocytosis were affected by increasing concentrations of toxicants.
