Twenty-two journalists were injured and 23 arrested (among them some of the injured) when police attacked a peaceful demonstration they were staging in Dacca on 16 May demanding the restoration of press freedom. They included Sanjay , Barua, an executive committee member of the Dacca Union of Journalists, who was reported to have suffered fractures to the right leg due to police beating. Some journalists were also said to have been beaten during detention. There were unconfirmed reports in July that all those arrested had been released in response to protests by local colleagues.
