This volume contains eleven essays with diverse disciplinary origins published in various journals and books between 1977-1994. The intellectual profile of the work is shaped by Smart's vocational and political persona. She writes as a feminist sociologist whose current theoretical concerns are informed by postmodern feminism. The book is an important contribution to the literature. It is accessible, well-written, covers a considerable amount of ground and deals with difficult theoretical questions in easily understandable language. It admirably addresses its student audience, but will surely prove valuable to all feminists engaged in debates about feminist theory in general and women and law in particular. Smart has paid special care to the way in which the raw material has been organized and presented and to the manner in which the objectives and theoretical concerns of the work are posited, defined and promoted. The book is formally divided into three sections dealing with respectively: the discipline of criminology; sexuality and the law; feminist theory and the law. Each is preceded by a short introductory note which has a double function. On the one hand it accounts for past misjudgments or any changes of view found in the different pieces within that section. On the other hand it traces common themes which link them to one another and to the author's wider political and theoretical agenda. The overall unity of the work is provided by the expert addition of a general introduction and a postscript which together form the framework within which the essays are to be read afresh and
