eke & Fuchs (4) reported 3 female patients undergoing patch testing who developed contact dermatitis in the exact areas of the ink from a surgical marking pen used to indicate the test areas. Subsequent patch testing to the components of this ink also revealed allergy to ninhydrin. Both patients whom we have reported showed allergic reactions to patch test marking dots and colophony. Colophony is a common component of various inks (5) and it is a likely constituent of Artline 70 pen ink. Colophony (rosin) and its derivatives are common causes of allergic contact dermatitis and allergic reactions to this substance are increasing (6). Contact Dermatitis 1994: 30: 183
