A spectrophotometric assay for the 5-glycoside of 1,4,5-trihydroxynaphthalene was applied to extracts prepd. from various parts of Juglans regia. Definite seasonal variations were found for the concn. and the amt. per unit of this substance. These were discussed with regard to the possible role of this substance in the economy of the plant.
