arguments are complex and act as debating points. This is a wonderful book and it should be essential reading to all associated with maps and mapping. And at the price available, there is little excuse for not purchasing it. It presents the topic in a wide context, and goes much beyond the representational paradigm of cartography. Now I do not believe that I am unique among those teaching cartography in this information age, and I have been presenting this argument to students in my geographical visualization classes for many years, so I do not need convincing; yet I find their argument engaging. I look at a National Geographic map supplement (or in the pages of the magazine) and I try to ask myself and to get my students asking, ‘Why is that element included and why is that emphasized? What is the deeper message? What are they not telling me?’ I find this a very rewarding approach, and it comes out of my reading of the writing of many authors who might be considered technical cartographers, as well as those who might be considered more reconstructed or humanistic cartographers. I am indebted to Denis Wood and John Fels for providing such a luscious and more analytical support for my reading of maps.
