Over the past decade, neuropeptides, defined as peptides of known structure secreted by neurons, have received increasing attention as possible intercellular signals in both invertebrate and vertebrate nervous systems. (For a recent comprehensive treatise, see Krieger et al 1983.) Although the mechanisms of neuropeptide action are still mostly unknown, sufficient experimental evidence suggests that at least some neuropeptides have physiologically important actions on neural target cells [e.g. an LHRH-like peptide on amphibian sympathetic ganglionic neurons (Jan & Jan 1983); substance P on guinea pig inferior mesenteric ganglion cells (Dun & Minota 1981)] to warrant consideration of how these actions might be terminated. The inactivation of intercellular signals must be viewed as a complex process extending from the point of receptor activation by these molecules to their "clearance" from the area bearing their receptors. By this argument, the processes of diffusion away from the receptor, concentrative reuptake, extra and intracellular enzymatic hydrolysis or covalent modifi cation, and internalization in association with receptor, or combinations of
