The ovary shadow ratio (OSR) was obtained from the equation as ovary width/body width x 100. Relationship between the OSR and the gonad somatic index (ovary weight/body weight x 100) was significantly correlated, and most of broodstocks (> 80%) with high OSR (>40%) eventually spawned. These indicate that the OSR is the appropriate method to evaluate the maturation level while keeping broodstocks alive.
