This article presents the results of an intensive and extensive survey study to determine the potential and feasibility of allowing bicycles on suburban and regional trains in the Berlin and Brandenburg regions of Germany. The survey study topics included estimates of trip length, number of trips per week/month, urban and suburban bicycle usage, and a perspective on the public's perception of the advantages of being able to take bikes on trains. In Germany, bicycles are very much considered part of the total transit picture and increasingly are included when there are discussions about modal choices, users/customers, accessibility and viable alternatives to increased automobile use.
