The biochemical and physiological events during the preimplantation stages of pregnancy, as well as the implantation of the blastocyst, depend upon a precise hormonal balance which is regulated by ovarian progesterone and estro-gen. Despite considerable research, it is still not clear how estrogen initiates decidualization or implantation in the progesterone primed uterus. A local pro-inflammatory reaction accompanied by an increase in uterine stromal capillary permeability at the site of blastocyst attachment has been considered to be one of the earliest discernible events and a prerequisite for implantation (Psychoyos, 1967; Finn & McLaren, 1967; McLaren, 1968). On the basis of this and several other findings, it was proposed that the release of histamine, a vasoactive amine, by estrogen is responsible for induction of implantation (reviewed by Nalbandov, 1971). However, Shelesnyak’s theory of histamine induction of decidualization or implantation was challenged by many investigators and did not gain general acceptance (reviewed by DeFeo, 1967).
