Compared the performances of goldfish (carassius auratus)(n= 46) with those previously reported for rats under conditions of differential reward. It was found that, unlike rats, goldfish (a) showed little or no decline in performance when shifted from a large to a small reward, and (b) extinguished more slowly after training with a large reward than with a small reward. Ss did not learn to respond appropriately when rewarded and nonrewarded trials were regularly alternated. It is suggested that this difficulty with alternation learning was due to interference between the aftereffects of the immediately preceding trial and those of earlier trials.(24 ref.)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
