This book is about the Japanese Diasporic community in Queensland from before Federation to the present. The idea for this book arose during the Year of Exchange -the national celebration of Australia-Japan Exchange in 2006. The University of Queensland, where the authors are based, also celebrated its 40th anniversary of teaching Japanese in the same year. Their special exhibition brought together not only people who were associated with the universities, but also a history of this part of Australia. The authors thought it was appropriate to compile a short history of the region in this special year. No history books are comprehensive. This book covers the State as widely as possible, but its focus is on and around Brisbane. A substantial portion of Chapters 1 & 2 is based on a chapter which Nagata Ymiko contributed to the publication Multicultural Queensland 2001. We acknowledge the kind permission from Multicultmal Queensland ofthe Premier's Department for its use. We also thank Ms Yuki Sayeg for the use of her paragraph on the Master of Arts in Japanese Interpreting and Translating in Chapter 3. This book tells the history of the early settlers who came to Queensland to work, how the community grew and the community's experience both in and with the wider Australian society. In addition to putting together relevant information to document this history, we have gathered life stories of people who have been and still are part of this history. The book also presents many images from the archives of the John Oxley Library and the University of Queensland, and other personal collections held by Japanese residents.
