Ni–Nb-based binary and ternary metallic glass wires with superior bending ductility and extremely high tensile strength exceeding 2GPa were prepared by the arc-melt-type melt-extraction method. Continuous metallic glass wires without a thick oxide layer and surface roughness were obtained from Ni60Nb20M20(M=Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, and Ta) alloys. However, an amorphous phase was not obtained in Ni60Nb20M20(M=Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, Al, Si, and Sn) alloys; further, a continuous metallic crystalline wire was formed only from the Ni–Nb–Fe alloy. In Ni–Nb based alloys, amorphous phase formation is favorable for the formation of continuous metallic wires by the arc-melt-type melt-extraction method.
