This paper looks at the distribution characteristics of the navigation environment in the Yangtze River trunk line, several information collection sensors are installed on ships which navigate in this line. Through experiment on ships, data related with energy consumption and navigation environment are collected. Water flow and waterway depth are proved to be the main influencing factors on ship’s energy consumption via Spearman correlation analysis. Then, data of water velocity and waterway depth which covers the entire trunk line are graded respectively using the k-means clustering algorithm. For the sake of building an evaluation matrix of navigation environment, the frequency distribution of each grade in different Yangtze River legs is counted statistically, and on this basis the similar legs are clustered using the hierarchical clustering algorithm. As a result, the waterway partition in the Yangtze River trunk line is completed. Furthermore, the distribution of ship energy consumption in different legs is also calculated out. Study results indicate that not only the navigation environment of the Yangtze River trunk line has distinctive regional differences, but the energy consumption level of ships also has a strong relationship with the region where ships navigate. Finally, the laws of the Yangtze River navigation environment are analyzed and the corresponding energy-saving navigation strategies are proposed, which is useful for the crews to navigate their ships energy-efficiently and safely.
