Pooling resources within an informal network may provide insurance against idiosyncratic risk and liquidity to undertake high-return but lumpy investment. The presence of this network may cause longterm consumption gains to its members. We take these ideas to the data by exploiting the information on surnames from a census of 506 poor villages in rural Mexico to identify whether households have first-degree relatives in the village. Using exogenous income variation and panel data, we show that households with first-degree relatives in the village (or ‘connected’ households) pool resources within their extended families but not with households without first-degree relatives in the village (or ‘isolated’ households). We find that connected households efficiently share risk with each other and that the effect of the same positive income shock differs for connected and isolated households: connected households invest more in their children’s human capital, a high-return investment, and less in poultry, a low return investment. Five years after this income shock, consumption is higher for connected households, despite having the same consumption as isolated households at baseline.
