The widespread occurrence of polyovular follicles and polynuclear ova among mammals is indicated by the reports of Hartman ( '26)' Lane ( '38)' Davis and Hall ( '50), and Pawson ( '51). The aberrant forms are more common in immature animals but are also present in older individuals. Attempts to explain the occurrence of these two types of abnormalities have been largely based on morphological evidence and the possibility of a sequential relationship between them, rather than on a viewpoint which regards them as part of the general problem of control of ovarian function. It is now generally agreed that control of follicular development is exercised both by the pituitary through its production of gonadotropins (Adams, '53) and secondarily through production of estrogens by the theca interna of the ovary (Hisaw, '47). The following work was undertaken to determine whether or not the administration of estrogen (reported by Payne and Hellbaum ('55) to be capable of supporting normal follicular maturation in the absence of the pituitary) would also reduce the number of polyovular follicles and polynuclear ova.
