FOR A diffeomorphism of a manifold f: M--+ M, Smale has introduced the notion of a hyperbolic structure on the non-wandering set, Q (j) off: For a general reference to Smale’s work, see [4]. It is Smale’s long range program to classify a Baire set of these diffeomorphisms. In such a program, n (f) and hyperbolic structures promise to play a crucial role.
