The treatment of eccentric fixation is one of the most difficult problems in the field of motility. With the introduction of modern diagnostic methods this condition is now more frequently diagnosed. The problem as to the cause of eccentric fixation has not been satisfactorily solved at the present time. Several explanations have been proposed in the past which, in absence of convincing experimental evidence, must, at present, still be regarded as hypotheses. The “scotoma hypothesis” was developed by Bangerter, l* 2 Biihme, 3, 4 and Oppel.“, 6 These authors consider the loss of macular function, that is, the central inhibitional scotoma as the cause of eccentric fixation.
