The differences between homologous structures might be explained by considerable differentiation among respective wing and elytra GRNs, or how subtle differences in the focal developmental stages reveal major temporal differences in gene expression across a conserved GRN. In" the GRN concept as a guide for evolutionary developmental biology", the authors draw particular attention to regulatory connections between transcription factors and I cis i-regulatory elements (CREs) of their target genes.[Extracted from the article]
