Microparticles in the form of emulsions, liposomes and microspheres have utility for a variety of medical applications to include not only drug delivery but also vaccine administration and use as diagnostic agents. This presentation will concentrate on parenteral administration and the application of concepts of particle engineering for the design of carriers that will provide site specific delivery, ie, drug targeting. These concepts include the deliberate modification of particle size, surface charge, surface hydrophobicity as well as the application of principles from colloid science, to include steric stabilization. Particles with the appropriate surface characteristics and particle size can be used for intravenous delivery in order to target the lung, liver, spleen, the general circulation or the bone marrow. The first two of these are now considered to be somewhat trivial in nature [11. They involve processes of filtration and recognition by the reticuloendothelial system, respectively, and can be exploited to provide good uptake of particulates in the lung and liver regions. In contrast, target-
