Third stage Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say larvae may be sexed with about 90% accuracy heavily pigmented ("black") larvae develop into females, very lightly pigmented larvae are males. Larvae cannot be accurately sexed by this means when the pigmentation is intermediate. Fourth instars may be rapidly and accurately (100%) sexed by simple microscopic examination of the imaginal antennal discs growing just under the larval antennae. In male larvae the discs are always larger and more fully differentiated than in females of the same age. They are most easily sexed immediately after the molt from the 3d stage, but the method is accurate throughout the 4th stadium. Last stage larvae can also be sexed with about 90% accuracy by examination of gonads or of the discs that form the external genitalia: both are visible only in young male larvae. The anatomy of the imaginal antennal discs is briefly described and the developmental stages between the sexes compared. Larvae in the 1st 2 stages could not be sexed by any method used. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Author
