‘Keywords’ were, in eighteenth-century English, terms that allowed the solution of a code or cypher–they literally unlocked a conundrum. By the mid-nineteenth century, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, they had acquired a more general use, designating a term or concept that explained or summarised a larger set of ideas–‘a word, expression, or concept of particular importance or significance’. In 1976, when Raymond Williams published his foundational study Keywords: A Vocabulary of Culture and Society, the term was redesignated to mean ‘significant, indicative words’ that are central to ‘the vocabulary of a crucial area of social and cultural discussion’(Williams 1985: 15, 24). The task of the scholar, as Williams presented it, was to unravel or disambiguate the various, often conflicting, meanings and associations of those terms in order for that discussion to take place in a clearer, more productive form. An extensive literature has since emerged in the humanities and social sciences–the
