Methods aredescribed for increasing the amount of information obtainable from electron micrographs of virus particles. To obtain an increase in image contrast, and to render small detail more easily visible, a method of optical differentiation is employed. To obtain an increase in resolution a-bove that which is on the original plate, two methods are used, both utilising the symmetry of the virus particle. The rotation technique which uses simple apparatus and a photographic enlarger, and a technique using a stroboscopic light source, are explained.[long dash]Authors.
