The development of immunosuppressive drugs has been central to the dramatic success of clinical transplan tation achieved over the last 15 years. While drugs such as ciclosporin and FK506 can prevent the development of allograft rejection, they exhibit a number of adverse sideeffects and have proven only partially effective in sup pressing auto-immune diseases. Therefore, there is a con stant search to identify new immunosuppressive agents with more powerful inhibitory actions and fewer un wanted side-effects. Deoxyspergualin, an analogue of the bacterial product spergualin originally purified from the soil commensal Bacillus laterosporous [1, 2], is one new immunosuppressive drug which has proven particularly efficacious in suppressing transplant rejection and shows much promise in the treatment of experimental models of auto-immune disease. As the use of deoxyspergualin in transplantation has been recently reviewed [3, 4], this paper will focus upon the effects of the drug in auto immune disease and its mechanism of action.
