Animal production is an important agricultural enterprise in the South east from the standpoint of farm income. It is also important from the standpoint of wastes produced and their potential effects on receiving streams. Eutrophication of lakes, reservoirs, and estuaries has raised realistic questions regarding the presence of nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon in run off from animal production areas. Animal wastes are also a concentrated source of bacteria normally used to characterize the sanitary quality of water. Diseases of mi crobiological etiology are known to be transmitted through waters that receive animal wastes. Knowledge of the pollutional loads imposed on streams from point and dif fused sources of animal production is necessary in formulating meaningful waste management requirements for water qual ity control. This report summarizes the findings of a 2-yr study undertaken to in vestigate the actual and potential impor tance of animal wastes in agricultural land runoff.1 Particular emphasis is given to amounts of, and factors governing, wastes discharging into streams from animal pro duction areas. The study included: (a) assessment of present animal waste man agement practices, (h) measurement of pollutants reaching streams from 12 typi cal agricultural sites in the Piedmont re gion of North Carolina, (c) development of predictive relationships to estimate the pollutional potential of similar animal pro duction units, (d) development of recom mendations for corrective action, and (e) identification of researchable problem areas.
