Vibrio anguillarum is the causative agent of classical vibriosis, one of the main problems in the aquaculture production of fish worldwide. This micro-organism is responsible for severe economic losses causing haemorrhagic septicaemia in a great variety of fish species of economic importance worldwide (see reviews Actis, Tolmasky & Crosa 1999; Austin & Austin 1999; Toranzo, Magarinos & Romalde 2005). Although a total of 23 serotypes of V. anguillarum have been described (O1–O23, European serotype designation), only serotypes O1, O2 and, to a lesser extent serotype O3, have been associated with mortalities in farmed and feral fish throughout the world (Tajima, Ezura & Kimura 1985; Sørensen & Larsen 1986; Muroga & Egusa 1988; Toranzo & Barja 1990; Toranzo, Santos & Barja 1997; Pedersen, Grisez, van Houdt, Tiainen, Ollevier & Larsen 1999). Some of the remaining serotypes (O4–O23), considered to include only environmental strains, have been described as virulent in fish (serotype O4; Pazos, Santos, Magarinos, Bandın, Nunez & Toranzo 1993) or associated with mortality of artificially reared cod (O4, O6 and O8; Larsen, Pedersen & Dalsgaard 1994).
