The postcritical setP(f) of a rational mapis the smallest forward invariant subset ofthat contains the critical values off. In this paper we show that every finite setcan be realized as the postcritical set of a rational map. We also show that every mapdefined on a finite setcan be realized by a rational map, provided we allow small perturbations of the setX. The proofs involve Belyi’s theorem and iteration on Teichmüller space.
