Transitional cell carcinomas of the urinary bladder were induced within 60 months (earliest carcinoma, 33 months) in 9 of 24 rhesus monkeys given 2-naphthylamine orally. The spectrum of neoplasia extended from benign papilloma to invasive carcinoma. Pathology other than carcinoma was observed in the urinary tract of some animals. The oral dosage ranged from 6.25 mg/kg/day to 400 mg/kg/day. Although a dose-response relationship was apparent, there were tumor-free animals that received high doses for long periods. On the other hand, a few monkeys received low doses, but presented small tumors at necropsy. Many urinary bladders examined at autopsy had multiple lesions. In some cases, papilloma, carcinomain situ, and invasive carcinoma were found in the same bladder. Hydronephrosis was observed in 3 animals with obstructive carcinomas.
