Experimental Materials. The purities of the metals were: lead, 99.99+%; zinc, 99.99%; strontium, 99+%; palladium, 99.5%; cerium, 99+%; uranium, 99.95+%.Procedure. A charge ofabout 1.5 kg. contained in a Morganite crucible w7as melted in a furnace under an argon pressure of 1100 torr. The furnace and auxiliary apparatus havebeen described earlier. 2 After the charge was heated to a desired temperature, themelt was stirred for 1 hr. and allowed to settle for 3 hr. prior to sampling. The time required for complete separa-tion of the phases was determined by sampling at set-tling times which varied from 1 to 24 hr. The Vycor pipets used to sample both phases have been described. 10 One modification was made for this (1)(a) Work performed under the auspices of the U. S.
